2024 Honda Civic 'EMII'
About this build
The Story of EMII — 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe
Before EMII ever came into my life, there was Initial D.
Watching Initial D changed the way I looked at cars. It wasn't necessarily about owning a car from the anime, but about the passion the characters had for their machines. The way they drove manual transmissions, the way they customized their cars, and how even an ordinary-looking car could become something special in the hands of someone who truly loved it. I wanted that feeling. I wanted a car I could call my own, learn to drive stick in, work on, and eventually turn into something that reflected who I was.
That's where EMII's story begins.
On April 23rd, 2024, I purchased a 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe for $2,300 with approximately 132,000 miles on the odometer. I thought I had finally found the perfect starting point for my journey. Unfortunately, that excitement didn't last long.
Almost immediately after purchasing her, EMII refused to go over 20 mph, her brakes began locking up, and the seller was nowhere to be found. What was supposed to be the beginning of a dream had quickly become a mechanical nightmare.
But I wasn't ready to give up.
Between April and June 2024, I replaced her entire clutch assembly, flywheel, flywheel bolts, water outlet gasket, brake booster, and brake master cylinder. With help from friends, countless hours of troubleshooting, and plenty of frustration, I finally got her driving properly.
Then came another unexpected setback. Her hood flew open while driving and slammed into the windshield. That incident led to the installation of her white replacement hood, which eventually became part of her unique appearance.
In early 2025, I tackled her suspension, replacing mismatched 2001 and 2003 struts with matching 2003 struts and installing new hub assemblies.
Just when things seemed to be improving, disaster struck again.
Around the middle of 2025, another driver ran a red light and collided with EMII's front end, damaging her driver's-side headlight area and bending her frame rail inward. For a moment, it seemed like everything I'd worked toward was being taken away.
But once again, I chose to rebuild instead of walking away.
I worked to straighten the damaged front end, replaced the bumper reinforcement bar, bumper, and both fenders, and slowly brought EMII back to life.
Throughout 2026, the journey continued with more mechanical work, including clutch hydraulics, valve cover gasket repairs, ignition problems, and replacing worn components. I also purchased a set of wheels from a friend, painted them myself, and installed them, marking another step toward making EMII truly mine.
Today, EMII has approximately 176,000 miles on her odometer, meaning we've traveled around 44,000 miles together since the day I brought her home.
Now I'm entering Stage 1 of my custom build: Restoration and Maintenance. Before worrying about horsepower, aggressive styling, or performance modifications, my goal is to make sure she's mechanically sound, reliable, and ready for whatever comes next.
Looking back, I think that's what Initial D taught me more than anything. It wasn't just about speed, drifting, or winning races. It was about the connection between a driver and their car. Understanding every sound, every weakness, every improvement, and appreciating the journey of making a machine your own.
EMII might not be an AE86, an RX-7, or a Skyline. She's just an old Honda Civic with mismatched body panels, battle scars, and a whole lot of history.
But to me, she's something much greater.
I didn't buy EMII because she was special. I'm making her special because she's mine.
And with Stage 1 just beginning, there's still one question left unanswered...
Just how far can an ordinary Civic go when its driver refuses to give up on it?
